Must-do activities on your family adventure in the Greek Islands

Greece’s paradisiacal islands have been a hotspot for sun-seeking families for years.

There are endless reasons that make the Greek Islands a desirable destination. From the perfect sandy beaches to the opportunity to discover the country’s fascinating heritage, there are indeed many.

However, as any parent will tell you, planning a holiday with children is a different proposition entirely.

All the beaches in the world will only get you so far before the dreaded boredom sets in.

Fortunately, the Greek Islands are blessed with a plethora of exciting must-do activities. They ensure both grown-ups and children enjoy a holiday they’ll never forget.

Whether you’re looking for a fun, educational experience for your little ones or an adrenaline-fueled adventure, you can be sure to find something here for even the fussiest travel critics.

Below, we draw your attention to three of the best family activities spread across three of the Greek Islands. Which of these will have your little ones screaming ‘are we there yet’?

Dinosauria Park, Crete

Tell the kids you’re going to spend the day learning about the history of the planet.

And…

They may well roll their eyes.

Dress it up with dinosaurs, playgrounds, and 5D cinemas…

You’ll have them very much on board. Furthermore, if the parents need any convincing, kids under three go for free!

Dinosauria Park is located just 15km east of Heraklion. It’s easily accessible from the capital’s busy resorts.

Once there, you will find the Dino Museum, which features a collection of replica prehistoric bones and fossils. And of course, there are plenty of opportunities for interactive learning.

With a sandbox containing bones and other treasures, children can pretend they are archaeologists for the day. Of course, there are also other workshops. A trip here will be both fun and educational.

Aqualand, Corfu

Aqualand is situated in the very heart of the island. And, it’s one of Corfu’s primary tourist attractions. It appeals to all different types of holidaymakers.

You don’t have to be a thrill-seeker to enjoy the attractions at Aqualand.

With designated areas for young children and plenty of other family-friendly activities, this aquatic adventure is suitable for the entire family.

With 51 slides and 11 pools set within a 75,000 square-meter forest, Aqualand is widely regarded as one of the best water parks in the country.

From the Pirate Area, suitable for children aged two to eight, to the Young Rebels zone designed for the more daring four to twelve-year-olds, Aqualand caters to children of all ages.

It is worth noting that the park is only open from May through to the start of October, so this attraction won’t be available if you’re traveling outside of the peak summer season.

Any visit to Aqualand in Corfu would not be complete without a dip in the world’s third-largest wave pool.

Afterward, get your breath back with a relaxing ride on the 350 meter-long lazy river.

A Greek Islands Classic – Valley of the Butterflies, Rhodes

A hotspot for nature-loving, adventurous families, the Valley of the Butterflies is one of Rhodes’ most popular attractions.

Situated in a unique 600-acre nature park, this enchanting section of the island is shrouded in exotic flora and is also home to a range of beautiful water features.

Whilst a trip to the valley at any time of year will be a truly magical experience, the best time to visit is in May, at the end of the wet season.

In May, thousands of fully-formed butterflies migrate to the valley following along the waterways, completely transforming the landscape.

In recent years, there has been a decline in the butterfly population in the valley. This has been due in no small part to the disturbance caused by tourists and local visitors.

Whilst the authorities want to continue to encourage visitors to the park, there are a few things you can do to help maintain the natural order in this area.

For instance, avoid any loud noises like clapping or shouting, and stick to the designated footpaths to avoid damaging any of the plants.
