Trail Description and Points of Interest

As you embark on your hiking adventure to Mount Stenhouse, be prepared for an exhilarating journey that reveals some of the most undisturbed natural beauty of Lamma Island. After all, the most beautiful places are often the ones that are the hardest to get to.

The route kicks off from the Sok Kwa Wan ferry pier and gently meanders uphill through the classic Hong Kong dense, lush, subtropical rainforest biome.

As you ascend, the forest canopy opens up to reveal stunning panoramic views of the South China Sea and the rugged coastline. You will also experience many of the most sweeping views of Lamma Island which are only accessible from the vantage points this route has to offer. Below are some of the views you’ll experience.

Once you reach the formal summit marker, you’ll swoop downhill and along one of Lamma Island’s most untraveled coastlines. It’s GORGEOUS!

Trail Head and Route

The journey to Mount Stenhouse begins and ends at the Yung Shue Wan ferry pier, easily accessible from the Central Ferry Piers. Once you’ve arrived at Yung Shue Wan, follow the signs leading to the trailhead. The route starts out well marked, and then gets a bit harder to follow (so download our route map below), taking you through varied terrain, including steep inclines and rocky paths. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit as well as the stunning coastal views you’ll get towards the end of the loop.

We recommend you complete the loop portion of the hike in a counterclockwise direction. Put another way, hike up to the peak of Mount Stenhouse first, and then continue on to the section that will afford you views of Lamma Island’s southeastern coastline and take you through Sham Wan Beach.
