This is us – Julia, Seth, Peri, and Kai!

Welcome To ForSomethingMore

Hello and welcome to ForSomethingMore!

Thanks for taking a moment to learn a bit more about us. In short, we’re the ShySki family, and we’re all about outdoor adventure family travel to off-the-beaten-path destinations. In a bit more detail, we’re full-time parents and travelers, environmental stewards, former ex-pats and educators, eternal lovers of Sichuan food, and in general, really active people!

One of the hardest things for us to do is stay indoors, and that’s why we’re usually outside as a family doing something active.

We love to travel to off-the-beaten-path destinations, but we equally love and value traveling right in our own backyard. On countless occasions, we’ve discovered that travel isn’t really about how far we go, but rather is about deeply we pay attention to all the tiny details that surround us.

And we are constantly humbled by the fact that the more we experience, the more we realize we haven’t experienced.

We invite you to follow along with us by joining our email list (the form is at the bottom of this page) or by following us on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube.

Why We Created ForSomethingMore

We created this site first and foremost because we love to learn through off-the-beaten-path adventure family travel. And, we love to share what we’ve learned during our travels with others.

We believe it is this learning and sharing process that makes the world a more understanding, caring, equitable, and peaceful place.

The second reason is that we hope to inspire others to travel as a family. While we thoroughly realize traveling with children in tow is a different experience than traveling pre-children, we are here to say that with the proper planning, it is indeed possible, and in countless ways, it is a unique and thoroughly satisfying experience.

Whether we are exploring in our own backyard or in a location that is brand new to us, we always find that our travel experiences and outdoor adventures lead us to grow as individuals and as a family.

As Mark Twain so aptly said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

Thus, we believe it is especially important for children to travel from as early an age as possible.

Why This Site is Called “ForSomethingMore”

Put simply, when we travel we are always looking ForSomethingMore than the typical tourist traps that are so easily found on mainstream travel sites.

Instead, we seek outdoor adventure travel experiences that allow us to connect with local people and thus local culture. We believe life begins at the end of our comfort zone.

What is Adventure Travel?

While there is no official definition, we broadly define Adventure Travel as an outdoor experience built around an activity that requires physical exertion and special skills.

Examples include backpacking, camping, hiking, biking, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, SUPing, etc.

One of our favorite outdoor adventure family travel experiences (although it was quite challenging) was when we trekked Poon Hill in Nepal in December when Peri was 8 months old. To say the least, we learned some very valuable lessons from that experience.

What Is The Purpose of ForSomethingMore?

We learn and share about outdoor adventure family travel to off-the-beaten-path destinations so that families (and frankly just about anyone) can create their own outdoor adventure travel experiences.
