ECOrepel DEET Free Insect Repellent And After Bite Stick
Coconut Matter recently sent us a few samples of their ECOrepel DEET free insect repellent and after bite stick.
Since it’s mosquito season here in Hong Kong, we’ve had ample opportunities to use this dual-purpose, all-natural, vegan, non-animal tested, and eco-friendly DEET-free bug repellent out on the trails.
Julia, Peri, Kai, and I have all used it while we were near the water, such as when we hiked the Ping Nam Stream waterfalls.
We’ve also used it when we were on a dryer hike such as this classic Quarry Bay hike – the Quarry Bay Tree Walk.
To put it simply:
We’ve found that ECOrepel’s DEET free insect repellent and after bite stick works really well!
In short, we like it because it’s:
- A DEET free alternative that actually works
- Dual-purpose (repellent and after bite)
- Safe for children and infants
- Easy to use and not messy
- Scented with citronella/lemon
- Packaged in 100% compostable materials

Why We Use DEET Free Insect Repellent
Since there are conflicting findings surrounding whether or not DEET is dangerous for people, we like to play it safe, and avoid it when possible.
We’re always balancing the possible risk of using DEET with the possible risk of contracting a mosquito-borne illness.
I got the Chikungunya Virus years ago, and it was NOT fun!
Another reason we try to avoid DEET is that it can damage synthetic materials such as the ones in our raincoats, tents, and our backpacks.
Long story short…
When we’re able to, we avoid DEET.
How It Performs – Why We Like ECOrepel
The simplest reason we like our ECOrepel DEET free insect repellent and after bite stick is because it really works!
By harnessing the power of PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol), a substance that is naturally found in the Java citronella plant, ECOrepel has helped us avoid many bug bites.
And…
In the unfortunate event that we do get some bites, the after-bite properties of the stick really help too.
Below is more about why we like this so much.
It’s Safe To Use
First, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that there is reasonable certainty that PMD will not harm adults, children, or infants.
We trust the EPA, so we’re confident that indeed it’s safe for us and the kids.
Second, Julia and Peri have used it a number of times. Both of them have extremely sensitive skin, and they’ve never had a problem.
I’ve used it, and Kai has too, and even though we don’t have such sensitive skin, we’ve also been fine.
It’s Dual Purpose – DEET Free Repellent And After Bite Stick
ECOrepel has helped us avoid bug bites in the first place.
And…
In the unfortunate event that we do get a bite or two, the Dragon’s Blood in it helps reduce the swelling and itch afterward.
Julia normally gets massive welts from mosquito bites, but now, no more!
ECOrepel protects against mosquitoes, midges, sandflies, and ticks. These are the most common bugs we’ve encountered both inside and outside of Hong Kong.
It’s Easy To Use
ECOrepel is a non-greasy solid stick, so we don’t worry about it leaking in our bag or pocket.
And indeed, it’s small enough to fit in our pockets!
We apply it in the same fashion that we apply a deodorant stick, and we’ve found that it works for 2-3 hours.
A few swipes on our arms, legs, and neck, and we’re good to go.
It Smells Nice
This next one is simple, but it’s also important.
ECOrepel has a refreshing citronella/lemon scent.
It’s Completely Eco-Friendly (Packaging Included)
We like to know that the products we buy are good for us and the environment.
Since ECOrepel is hand-made with biodegradable, plastic-free, and compostable materials, we know it checks both of these boxes.
Though we have not yet composted the empty cardboard tube that it comes in, we’re certainly going to when it’s empty!
Money For Value – ECOrepel
If you check the price of ECOrepel and compare it to the price of other insect repellents, you will quickly realize that it’s quite a bit more expensive.
However…
The majority of other insect repellents we’ve used in the past come packaged in plastic containers and contain questionably dangerous ingredients.
And, this stuff is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way.
Put more simply…
When you buy ECOrepel, you’re not only buying a safe and effective product. You’re also contributing to keeping our planet a greener and safer place for everyone.
Frankly, countless other products should carry a higher price tag, but unfortunately, not every company out there is as environmentally conscious as Coconut Matter.
