family exploring the Coba ruins in Quintana Roo Mexico
The Coba Ruins are an archeological marvel!

The Ancient Coba Ruins Are Stunning

The Coba Ruins are not to be missed, as they are an archaeological site famous for having the highest temple in the Yucatan Peninsula and the oldest network of stone roads in the Mayan world. There are also stone stelae with inscriptions narrating important events of this ancient city. If you’re into Mexican archeology or anthropology, this is a must-have experience!

The name ‘Cobá’ is thought to be the original name and means ‘turbulent water’, due to its proximity to lagoons.

How To Get To Coba

From Cancun: To get to the Cobá Ruins from Cancun, you can take Highway 307 south and then turn off at Tulum onto Highway 109. This drive takes approximately two and a half hours. If you prefer public transportation, there are ADO buses that leave from Cancun to Coba, although less frequently.

From Tulum: Cobá is only a 45-minute drive from Tulum. Take Highway 109 directly to Cobá. You can also opt for a cab or Colectivo from Tulum, which are quick and accessible options.

From Oaxaca: If you’re coming from Oaxaca, consider taking a domestic flight in order to avoid the 20+ hour drive.

Why Is Cobá A Good Place To Visit?

Coba was one of the largest and most important cities of the Maya civilization. Its network of sacbes (white roads) is the most extensively known, connecting different parts of the city and other Mayan regions. The most emblematic structure is the Nohoch Mul pyramid, which, at 42 meters high, offers impressive views of the surrounding jungle.

Unlike other more crowded tourist sites, Cobá retains a more authentic and less commercialized atmosphere. This allows visitors a quieter and more profound experience of Mayan culture.

What Will You See In Cobá?

Temple Of The Church

The Temple of the Church is one of the oldest in the archaeological site and the second tallest after the great pyramid of Coba, with 24 meters high.

Temple Of Nohoch Mul

The Temple of Nohoch Mul is the highest pyramid of the Coba Ruins measuring 42 meters high.

Not long ago you could climb to the top and see breathtaking views of the Mayan jungle, but this has changed. The National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH, closed this access at the beginning of the pandemic.

Cobá Ball Game

In the precinct of Coba, there are two areas of the ball game, one of the most famous activities of the time.

It consists of two parallel walls with a protruding base and a small hoop through which they had to introduce the ball. It is a very important ritual in the Mayan culture and many times they even gave their lives.

Oval Temple Or Xaibé

It is a different small pyramid since its corners are rounded. It has a height of 14 meters and four levels that represent the seasons of the year.
