    • How can my greatest joy also bring great sadness?
Even when I try my best to hang on to every moment and appreciate everything- even when it’s hard, it still feels like it's not enough time. The boys are growing faster by the day and it is so amazing to watch, yet sad at the same time. We have spent two years at home with them full time. We’ve not yet had a day where we have been without them, yet I still feel their tinyness slipping away. My new mindfulness focus is to find the new little habits or phrases that they say or do and appreciate them for where they are right now. ❤️💕❤️ It just flies!

    • 💪🎉 There are some things we are absolutely willing to do to get to some pretty epic places with our kids. One of those things is to carry them when they need it.

Each stage of the baby wearing and toddler wearing hiking journey is different. We are in the season of life right now where our two year old does a pretty darn good job of hiking, until he hits a wall and then, we should either be prepared to stop every 30 seconds for 10 min at a time, or we offer to carry him. Coming in at 33 pounds, it's not an easy choice to make, but there are never any regrets when we think about the amazing experiences we have with the kids. Someday, carrying him won't be an option, so being grateful while it still is an option is something we take and run with.

Which season of baby/toddler wearing are you in? 💕

    • @blueridgenps is beautiful anywhere you are, but the stretch near Sylva, NC and Waynesville, NC is absolutely gorgeous. There are SO MANY beautiful trails, picnic spots and pull offs to enjoy with kids!

✨BONUS- this hike is especially good for kids because of the learning opportunities!

📍Devil’s Courthouse

0.8 miles out and back
242 ft elevation gain
Paved / dirt path

Learning opportunity 🦅 -
These cliffs are home to the world’s fastest animal - the Peregrine Falcon. They soar at 65mph and can dive at over 200mph. They return to the same mate and nest year after year which is why it’s important to respect the signs at the Devil’s Courthouse and only stick to the viewing platform. The Falcons nest on these cliffs and they are making a comeback from near extinction. 💪

Our kids have been obsessed with learning more about Peregrine falcons ever since we hiked Devil’s Courthouse. What an amazing real world learning opportunity for them that has now grown into wanting to learn more about how we can protect these gorgeous creatures.

Did you know the Peregrine falcon was the fastest animal on earth? 🫢

    • We share with them our passion- and THEY LOVE IT TOO!

On this particular day, we were only driving up to the @blueridgenps to have a picnic and our 2 year old started up the mountain and didn’t look back. 😂

Some things we make sure to do so that everyone enjoys our family time outside:

🌳We ask the kids what type of adventure they want to do. Sometimes they feel like biking, playground, hiking, pump track, library, stream/ river time, swimming or just sending their monster truck toys over speed bumps in the campground 😂. We try to weigh everyone’s ideas and pick the best one for that day.

🌳We go out in all weather. We want to make sure our kids know that, if we have the right gear, going out in all types of weather can be super enjoyable and gives us variety.

🌳 We keep a nature journal on @inaturalistorg The kids LOVE going to different places to see what different species of plants and animals we can see. It makes every adventure even more exciting.

🌳 We check in with them regularly during (big) adventures to make sure they are still okay to keep going or if it’s appropriate to turn back, we do. It’s important that even when we do decide to do a strenuous hike that we have a way to carry them and give them an “out.”

We believe kids can do hard adventures, but we always want to make sure that they get a say and that we show them just how enjoyable and rewarding doing hard things is!

So, yes, sometimes, our kids encourage US to go up a mountain. 😂⛰️

    • This mantra has changed the fabric of our lives- quite literally.

We changed our entire lives, so that we could be with our kids as much as possible in these first ten years. It comes with sacrifice, but for us, the time is short and the moments are precious and there is no place we’d rather be than with our boys, watching them grow up wild. 🌳🌺🏔️

The days don’t always look like this highlight reel- these are some of the very sweet moments. Days can sometimes look like arguments, tantrums, impatience, and frustration, but when I remember how quickly time passes, I always try to embrace where I am in my parenting and life journey right now.

Cheers to always trying to be more present ❤️

    • The @blueridgenps is full of SO MANY GREAT HIKES- especially for kids. The cool thing about it is, many times, because the Blue Ridge Parkway is following a ridge, many of the hikes are short and not too strenuous to get to the top. WIN! 🎉

This trail was perfect. It had us going through beautiful forests, meadows and finally, up to the blueberry patches at the top where we got a 360 degree view of the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains. 🌺🌳🌺🌳😍

📌save this for later, because you don’t want to miss this one!

📍Sam Knob trail
📏 2.6 miles RT
🥾 moderate
☀️ exposed (bring layers/ rain gear and sunscreen)
🐻 bears in the area, so of course, keep kids close and a safe distance
🫐blueberries galore! - it is LEGAL to pick berries along the blue ridge parkway, so, if you come in the right season, enjoy a sweet treat. 😊

Questions? Let us know! Happy hiking!

    • 👋 Hi there! We are the Shyski family and we currently live and travel full time in our 28 ft travel trailer. It’s been almost two years (gasp) since we started this journey and to say it has been life changing is an understatement.

For those of you who have been here awhile, you know we called Hong Kong 🇭🇰 home before we started this journey of being full time nomadic world schoolers. We still consider Hong Kong 🇭🇰 one of our homes and to this day miss it dearly.

These years on the road have been such a time of growth for us, not only as individuals, but also as a family. We have had highs and lows (as anyone does), but when your home isn’t something rooted to the ground, it can be a very humbling experience.

Two years ago, the thoughts of…
💭 where will we sleep tonight?
💭 do we have enough water?
💭what does this lever do?
💭will the trailer fit there?
💭what if something happens to our home on wheels?
💭are we safe boondocking in the middle of nowhere?
💭are we doing right by our kids?
💭what will our family and friends think?
💭what if there is no service?
💭can we really do this?
💭have we budgeted accordingly?
💭what will we do if we get sick?

…all scared me. Now, I chuckle at some of these because we have learned SO MUCH about how to live on the road and how to enjoy it to the fullest extent possible.

We are grateful every single day for the life we have and recognize how fortunate we are to have these experiences. We are grateful for taking the leap and diving into something we knew nothing about, because it has forever changed us. ❤️

Thanks for being here, friends. We appreciate all your encouraging words, ideas, suggestions, love and friendship.

So, what’s next for us? Well, we will be sharing about that soon enough. ❤️

    • 7 trails near Waynesville, NC you SHOULD do! 🌳

(Save this for your WNC adventure 📌)

1. Sam Branch Falls and Wash Hollow Falls 💧- This super short (0.5 mile) hike is perfect for those who love to experience waterfalls and listen to the rushing water while having a snack. Our 2 and 4 year old hiked it and when it came time for the water crossing, we held them/ guided them across.

2. The Pinnacle Trail 🥾 - This hike is moderately difficult, but worth the effort. We brought our @kinderpack carriers to get the kids to the top! It’s about 6.8 miles RT and rewards you with an amazing view!

3. Waterrock Knob ⛰️- Waterrock Knob is one of our favorite stops along the @blueridgenps . Not only can you have a picnic right from the parking lot, but the hike up to the knob is completely family friendly and gorgeous! This 1.2 mile RT trail will stay with you forever.

4. Richard Balsam Nature Loop Trail 🌳- Another kid friendly hiking trail along the @blueridgenps lined with blueberries and beautiful forests. You even get a lovely view of the Blue Ridge mountains on the way down.

5. Big Creek Trail 💦- Want to explore a side of @greatsmokynps that not many people explore? Head to Big Creek trail for a chance to swim in midnight hole and see Mouse Creek Falls! With the trail only being 4 miles roundtrip, it’s manageable and FUN with young kids.

6. Woodfin Falls (Mountains to Sea trail)💦- Woodfin Falls is actually a viewing point off the @blueridgenps , but if you follow the mountains to sea trail from there, you get a chance to spot the gorgeous lady slipper flowers along the trail.

7. Boogerman Trail 🌳- If seeing an old growth forest is your thing, definitely check out this trail! It’s perfect for kids (especially the first 1 mile of it) and you can even do the entire 7.3 mile loop if you want to try to spot some 🐻. We opted for a 2 mile out and back.

Which trail is your jam 🎶?

    • Without a doubt, if you’re looking for a hike where you get a lot of bang for your buck, this is it!

Since Waterrock Knob is along the Blue Ridge Parkway, just driving to the trailhead is gorgeous. We often drive up to the overlook and have dinner with a view. If you want to get a hike in and you don’t want to have to carry your small kids, this trail is perfect!

📏 1.2 mile RT
⛰️ 412 ft elevation gain
🥾 some paved path, steps and rock steps

If you’re feeling really adventurous, take a side trail to the old plane wreck site. ✈️

What do you think? Sound cool!?
